A dispensing optician, also known as an optical dispenser, works as part of an eye care team alongside optometrists or ophthalmologists (who issue the optical prescription). It involves the practical side of optics – making of lenses, fitting of frames and related services.

Currently the National Diploma: Optical dispensing is needed to qualify as a dispensing optician, incorporating in-service training. The Cape Peninsula Universitiy of Technology is the institution to approach, it is the only qualification of its kind in South Africa.

Who will be your typical employer and is there the possibility of being self-employed?

One can work for or with an optometrist or an ophthalmologist (eye spesialist), or at an optical laboratory, or teach at a tertiary institution. Going into private practice is possible, especially if an optometrist or ophthalmologist refers their patients to you for the practical work on lenses and frames.

Which other skills would you recommend one should acquire to function in this field?

This is a very practical occupation. One will also need business skills, which is part of the course, entrepreneural skills, people skills and time management skills.

Which personality- and other traits does this career require?

This occupation requires patience, one must be very thorough, paying attention to detail, have a love for people and the ability to work under pressure.

What is the most demanding aspect of your career?

The pressure of the workload is sometimes demanding and one has to keep abreast and informed about new developments in optics.

What is the most satisfying aspect of your career?

It is very satisfying to see a happy and satisfied client, with comfortable spectacles and clear vision. Also knowing that they will recommend others to my business.
